This page assumes the thesis at full strength: a sealed vacuum-energy device wherever one is wanted, aneutronic lattice fusion as the first door into the field, and transmedium field-drive craft with inertia cancelled that reach any valley, coast or seabed without a road and without a sound. Combustion ends because something better exists, and removal, cleanup and restoration stop being priced and start being chosen.
The capability we assume
Two capabilities, both being built now, and one consequence that follows from them.
The first is a sealed device that draws power from the vacuum. Three funded programmes are on the bench now: Garret Moddel's asymmetric optical and Casimir resonator at Colorado Boulder, Harold "Sonny" White's Casimir power cell, and Charles Chase's asymmetric resonant tunnelling diode at the UnLab, where electrons tunnel through a barrier they should not clear and drag the zero-point energy through with them. Chase's summary is that all three are one idea — engineer an asymmetry in the vacuum, then let it do work. Underneath sits settled physics: the Casimir force, measured to about one percent by 1998, and Wilson and colleagues in Nature in 2011 turning vacuum fluctuations into real photons. The first door into that reservoir is fusion. NASA Glenn published real nuclear reactions inside a deuterated metal lattice in Physical Review C in 2020 — published and peer-reviewed — because a lattice screens charge and drops the Coulomb barrier locally. Clean Planet in Japan is carrying the same phenomenon toward industrial boilers with Tohoku University and Miura; Astral Systems in the UK is on a different lineage to the same place. The fuel that matters is aneutronic, proton and boron-11: products emerge as an ion beam one way and an electron beam the other, and current is induced directly in a coil. No steam, no turbine, no Carnot ceiling, nothing to shield. Chapter 12 teaches the screening physics.
The second capability is that field seen from the other side. Extract energy from the vacuum and you have already warped spacetime — Ashton Forbes states it flatly: you get energy, and you also get motion. A conditioned electromagnetic beam carrying a coherent vector potential can structure a phase gradient that mimics the frame dragging of a rotating mass, and the hardware that twists that phase is an undulator. Craft built this way carry no reaction mass, hover, accelerate hard, make no sonic boom, and cross air, water and vacuum with no transition penalty. Chapter 8 and the vector potential course teach the field variable it acts on.
The consequence is the whole page. Every large environmental repair we have ever costed — pulling carbon back out of the air, separating mixed waste, making fresh water, reaching a wrecked valley — is an energy bill and a transport bill. Both go to zero.
First-order effects
Combustion loses on the merits. Coal, oil and gas are burned because they were the densest cheap energy anyone had found. Put something denser and cheaper beside them and substitution is arithmetic, not a moral campaign. Power stations, furnaces, ships and heavy plant convert on the ordinary replacement cycle, because the new thing is simply better.
Emissions end across the whole economy, not just the grid. Cement kilns, steel furnaces, shipping, aviation, heating and fertiliser plants all want heat and electricity, and can take both from something that oxidises nothing.
Removal stops being priced. Most of what direct air capture costs today is the energy to run the fans, cycle the sorbent and release the gas. Take that term out and what remains is plant and land — drawdown becomes a question of how much we decide to do.
Cleanup becomes fundable everywhere. Plastic in rivers, legacy mine drainage, contaminated soil, abandoned wells: none are mysteries. They wait because separating, pumping and hauling cost energy and nobody will pay. Mixed waste becomes an ore body outside every city.
Land and rivers are released. No fuel crops, no fossil infrastructure, no pressure to open new mining frontiers. Once fresh water is made at the coast, the abstraction that dries out rivers becomes pointless — environmental flow stops being the last claim on a river and becomes the default.
Second-order effects
Restoration becomes an industry with no ceiling. Reforestation, wetland rebuilding, reef seeding, river reconnection and soil repair are limited today by money, machinery and access. All three are energy in disguise.
Wild country stops needing roads. The great secondary damage of conservation work is the track cut in to do it. A silent craft carrying no reaction mass sets down in a valley, works, and lifts out leaving nothing — and because the drive is transmedium, seabed and reef become as reachable as hillside.
Farming and fishing pressure eases. Water made at the coast and moved uphill for nothing changes what land can feed people — the subject of water and food. Less pressure on land is less pressure on everything living on it.
Mining stops being a frontier. When taking matter apart costs nothing, recovery beats extraction for nearly every element — the argument manufacturing makes in full. New pits stop being proposed because they stop being the cheap option.
Third-order effects and beyond
We move from taking to tending, which is the larger job. A civilisation that can repair anything is answerable for everything it chooses not to repair. Abundance does not retire environmental ethics; it removes every excuse that was standing in for them.
Matter becomes assemblable. Chase and Mo Armon's coherent matter-wave beam phase-locks atoms using the vector potential, with no energy exchange, and Chase's calculated deposition resolution is 0.2 nanometres — atomic assembly. Ashton's reaction is the right one: this is alchemy. Carbon taken out of the air stops being a waste stream to bury and becomes feedstock for the material you build the next thing from.
Earth stops being the whole ledger. A drive carrying no propellant, which treats distance as the engineered quantity, puts industry and mining somewhere other than a biosphere — see space and exploration. The heaviest, dirtiest things we do stop needing to happen here.
And the frame changes. Chase's line belongs on a wall: the universe is a giant energy cycle. We spent two centuries drawing down a stock of buried sunlight and calling the consequences an environmental problem. Coupling to the vacuum is joining the cycle instead — the real end of the fossil era, not a cleaner version of it.
A day in that world
Ines is on the delta before the light, because the birds are the survey and the birds do not wait.
The craft that brought her out sits on the mud fifty metres off, quiet as a parked bicycle. It came in low over ninety kilometres of water and reed and left no track, because there is none to leave. She has worked deltas for nineteen years and still finds the silence uncanny — she learned this job in a diesel boat you could hear from the far bank.
The mangrove blocks went in eight seasons ago. She walks the transect she has walked since, counting stems, counting crab holes, pushing a probe into sediment that is finally holding. Behind her the channel runs clear, because the pumping station upstream was switched off the year the coastal plant opened and nobody has taken water out of this river since.
At ten she meets the two who run the sediment barges, moving silt that a century of dredging took from where it belonged. The work is unglamorous, enormous, and funded for thirty years.
She eats lunch sitting on a root. A heron works the shallows four metres away and does not care about her. This was an oil terminal.
Late in the day she files the counts and the craft lifts her home over the reeds, without a sound.
Numbers that change
The reservoir we are drawing on. Eric Davis's comparison table puts dark-energy density at about one nanojoule per cubic metre and electromagnetic zero-point energy, integrated to the nucleon Compton cutoff, at about ten to the power one hundred and thirteen joules per cubic metre. The roughly one-hundred-and-twenty-order gap is the great open problem of theoretical physics, and this thesis reads it as the size of what is unclaimed.
What comes out of the reactor. Today, every thermal plant on Earth throws most of its heat away through a turbine. In an aneutronic dense-plasma-focus machine, the products emerge as an ion beam one way and an electron beam the other, and current is induced directly in a coil — no steam cycle and no Carnot ceiling. LPP Fusion reports peak ion energies in the range proton–boron-11 fusion requires, around 260 keV.
The marginal cost of removal and repair. Today, most of the price of pulling a tonne of carbon back out of the air is energy. In that world, zero — no fuel to buy, ship or lift. What is left is plant, land and the decision.
Reaction mass needed to reach a wild place. Today, a road, a boat or a helicopter. In that world, none: a field-drive craft carries no propellant, which is why the observables are hover, hard acceleration and silence.
What it would take
Finish the device. All three programmes work inside the rule Chase states himself: nothing comes out of the vacuum unless you break symmetry or drive it out of equilibrium. Each engineers that asymmetry on purpose. His first cantilever deflected the hoped-for way, then proved contaminated by deposition stress in the film, and Sandia National Laboratories is fabricating the replacements — a named systematic and a named next measurement is what a live experiment looks like.
Carry lattice fusion to a shipping product. The NASA Glenn papers are published. Clean Planet with Tohoku University and Miura, and Astral Systems in the UK, are the teams to watch, and an industrial boiler is a nearer milestone than a power station.
Solve the materials. Salvatore Pais and the source who goes by Anthony Williams give the same answer to why this is not already everywhere: the theory has been in the literature for a century, and the bottleneck is material science — a fabrication problem, the most tractable kind of hard problem there is.
Build the quiet craft. Inertia as the vacuum's reaction to acceleration is Haisch, Rueda and Puthoff in Physical Review A in 1994; Pais holds a US Navy patent on an inertial mass reduction device; the phase-twisting undulator is ordinary accelerator hardware pointed at a new job. Chapter 8 and the vector potential course are the route in.
Build the ecology at the same pace. Knowing how to restore a delta, a reef or a peatland is its own science, starved today because nobody could pay for the work anyway. Fund it now, so the knowledge is ready when the constraint lifts.
Stewardship
Restore rather than redesign. With energy free there is no case for aerosol geoengineering or planetary machinery nobody can switch off. Repair the thing that was there. It is cheaper, and it is reversible.
Give the wild its silence back. Field craft are quiet, which will tempt everyone to fly everywhere. Wild country should stay hard to visit by choice rather than by cost, and those rules are easiest to write before the traffic exists.
Fund the poorest coastlines first. Mangroves, reefs and deltas protect the people with the least, and they are the fastest returns in restoration. Send the first devices and craft there, not to the richest estuaries.
Measure in public. When repair is affordable, the temptation is to claim it. Open sensing, open data and independent verification keep restoration from becoming a story told about itself.
Take the responsibility that comes with it. A world that can fix anything will be judged by what it leaves broken — a heavier ethic than scarcity ever imposed, and the right one.
Signals to watch
